How Effort DNA Works  

Effort DNA measures how consistently you're using the Pre-PG app the way it is designed to give you the maximum benefit. 

To calculate your daily Effort DNA, the system looks at four types of effort you put in: 

1. Weakness Practice — Focus on Your Weakest 30% Subjects/Topics 

This is the heart of Effort DNA. 

PrepDNA Analysis

The app identifies your bottom 30% subjects or topics using your PrepDNA — the areas where your accuracy, recall, or speed is weak. 

To improve you your Weakness Practice bar: 

• You must attempt a minimum of 100 questions from your weakest subjects (daily), or 
• 15 questions from every weak topic 

Only then does the system treat it as genuine work on your weak zones.

2. Deep Revision — Revise Older 30% Subjects/Topics

It asks you to revise the oldest 30% of your practiced subjects/topics. 

The benchmark is:

• Ideally, spending an hour daily on solving Deep Revision questions.

Let me give you a bit of history to explain why we can do it. 

The Making of PrepDNA 

We started MCQdb (parent company of Pre-PG) with the goal of helping students to succeed in exams and get to their dreams. We had a slow start but grew fast over the last year almost completely driven by word-of-mouth recommendations. Throughout this time, we have been analyzing every student’s performance. 

By this January, when we crossed 150,000 users, we had analyzed data from over 60,000 Pre-PG doctors who had appeared in NEET PG. 

This data was a goldmine for us to start correlating the progress of our users and their marks and ranks in NEET PG. It included over 70% of the students who got in top 5000 (over 3500 students in top 5000 had used Pre-PG). 

To understand and analyze every Pre-PG student we had to split the huge NEET PG syllabus into 2,800+ concepts. Tens of thousands of our users contributed to this effort! We organized questions by many more aspects, e.g., one-liners, case-based, thought-based, confusing questions, difficult questions, obscure questions, difficulty levels, etc. 

With the content organized, we started slicing and dicing over 115+ million attempts data in many different ways and tracking the progress of all our students to understand what made them successful. 

Finally, after three months of hard work by our data scientists and developers, we got the ingredients of what correlates with success (or failure), all the way from Shiralee Runwal, Madhan Ram to our users who got 50,000+ ranks. 

The results were mind-boggling, so much so that even we did not initially believe them. In this blog, we are only going to talk about one aspect of our research and findings and hold off on some of our surprising findings. 

What is PrepDNA? 

PrepDNA is your unique level of preparation, which acts as a guide to your goal, and which areas you need to focus on to get there. Just like your DNA, PrepDNA has all the information of your level of preparation and no two doctors will have the same PrepDNA. PrepDNA will also tell you how to mutate it by focusing on the right concepts to master. 

To build you PrepDNA, we analyzed the daily test performance of each of our users and evaluated their weaknesses and strengths relative to other users getting selected in top 100 (or users who consistently appeared in top 30 in PrepGp prep daily rankings). 

PrepDNA is a map of your preparation. It gives you view into your weaknesses and strengths in a single graph. You can drill down to see topic level (and later concept level) weakness and strengths. We are also publishing PrepDNAs of few of our students at different ranks so that you can use them to judge where you stand when comparing to these students and how much work is needed to get there. 

Even though I've mentioned the ranks, you could have easily figure it out if I'd jumbled these PrepDNA up. As the user practices more, we start getting more of this information for every concept that we have. This information then helps us create the PrepDNA.  The gray color denotes that we do not have enough data for those concepts to find out PrepDNA for those concepts/topics. 

What does PrepDNA show? 

PrepDNA is a weighted color-coded grouping of concepts or topics that signify importance (by size) and proficiency (by color). For example, in the graph shown above, you can see that Medicine has the highest importance. Similarly, the height of a colored cell tells how many concepts are a part of that particular proficiency level. 

We've weighted the colors to identify success clearly, and only 90+ proficiency is green (varying shades). Red signals you need to work on those subjects/topics till they become at least yellow. You can also dive deeper into subject level PrepDNA, where you will see the topic wise preparedness and color coding representing concepts in that topic. 

How does this work? 

As our students practice or take daily tests, we analyze each of their attempts on parameters like the concept, question difficulty, guess likelihood, user confidence, and more, to give the student a proficiency gain number. 

Using PrepDNA 

The sole purpose of PrepDNA is to help you prepare in a focused manner with a constant feedback loop. You should work on the weakest areas first, and your goal is not to have an area that is so weak that it may cost you your rank. PrepDNA is your weakness and strength analysis on steroids. Until now, doctors relied on our Daily subject tests, or Grand tests to identify their weakness as compared to others preparing for NEET. 

We've taken this guesswork out and given you exactly what you are strong at or weak in relative to at least 60,000 other doctors 

As a student, your goal would be to make a weekly plan on which weak areas you will focus on and make them one of the stronger areas. Work on the plan on a daily topic level. Practice questions on the topic, read notes and practice more until you reach the next level in the topic. Then move to next topic. DO NOT move to next topic until the first topic has not reached a satisfactory level. If you can manage 2-4 topics every day, you will be done with full syllabus in 3-4 months (which is perfect for next NEET PG exam).

The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is a core screening test administrated by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) for Indian or overseas citizens who have achieved their MBBS, from institutes which are located outside of India.

• The marks obtained in NExT Step-1 are calculated as whole numbers, representing the raw scores.

NExT Step-2 Scoring:

• The results for NExT Step-2 examinations are declared as Pass or Fail.

Minimum Scores to Pass:

• To pass NExT Step-1, candidates need to score a minimum of 50% (50 out of 100) or half of the maximum possible raw scores.

i) Eligibility for Indian medical graduates to pursue internship:

A medical student who has completed their undergraduate medical education from a college recognized by the national medical commission can be eligible for a compulsory rotating internship. To qualify, they must meet the following criteria:

1. Successfully pass each of the six theory papers of NExT Step-1.
2. Pass the practical/clinical examination of the III MBBS/Final MBBS (Part 2) as conducted by the respective university or institution.

ii) Eligibility for foreign medical graduates to pursue an internship

A foreign medical student who has completed their medical education abroad and meets the requirements specified by the national medical commission can be eligible for a compulsory rotating internship. To be eligible, NExT aspirants must meet the following criteria:

a) Successfully pass each of the six theory papers of NExT step 1.

iii) Eligibility to become a licensed doctor in India and get registered

Both Indian medical graduates and foreign medical graduates shall be registered in the national medical register or state medical register, depending on the case, and obtain a license to practice modern medicine in India if they meet the following requirements:

1. Complete the required internship and fulfill the specific criteria mentioned in the regulations.
2. Pass the practical/clinical examination known as NExT step 2.
3. Meet the registration and license requirements set by the NMC.
4. Fulfill any additional requirements as specified by the commission.

iv) Eligibility for admission to postgraduate medical courses

If you have a license to practice medicine and are registered in the national or state medical register, you can apply for specialized postgraduate medical courses. These courses are offered in colleges approved by the commission. To be eligible, you must fulfill certain criteria.

1. They must be eligible for and granted a license to practice modern medicine in India, meeting the requirements mentioned in subsection (iii) of section 2.3(4) in the Gazette.
2. They should participate in the common counseling process prescribed by the commission through an authorized authority.

Note: Those who were granted a license and registered before the implementation of these regulations and wish to pursue postgraduate courses in broad specialties need to appear only for NExT step-I.

V) *Utilization of NExT Scores for purposes other than above

The government of India, the state governments, any organization of the government of India, the state governments, and any autonomous or private body /institution may utilize the NExT step 1 scores for purposes such as employment, scholarship, fellowship, etc.

*MBBS degree will be awarded after passing of final MBBS and successful completion of a one-year internship.

On June 27th, the national medical commission (NMC) organized a webinar on the NExT wherein representatives from various medical colleges participated.

An important aspect highlighted during the webinar was that from 2024 onwards, NExT is set to replace the NEET PG and all the existing medical entrance examinations, including INI-CET (AIIMS, PGI, JIPMER, NIMHANS), and FMGE, streamlining the assessment process for medical professionals.

AIIMS Delhi has been entrusted with the responsibility of conducting the NExT step 1 examination, which is scheduled to be held biannually in May and November.

1. What is NExT?

NExT is a standardized exam that identifies and promotes exceptional medical students for practice or higher education, ensuring they possess the necessary skills to excel in their medical field.

2. What is the exam pattern of NExT NEET PG?

The exam is divided into two stages:

The NExT step- 1

• Theory-based exam in online mode consisting of multiple-choice questions.
• Total 540 questions (successfully clearing all the 6 subjects in this exam is a prerequisite for participating in the internship program).

The NExT step- 2

• Practical examination held by respective state colleges/ universities.
• Paper 2 will comprise seven clinical subjects. It will be clinical case-based and will have simulated cases aimed at evaluating practical /clinical skills, decision-making, and analytical skills.
• Students have to complete their internship before appearing for the NExT Step - 2 exam.

3. What is the question pattern for NExT Step 1 paper?

The NExT step 1 paper will be structured into three parts, each with a specific focus. Of the MCQs included in NExT 1:

• 60-70% will assess problem-solving and analytical skills.
• 20-30% will test comprehension abilities.
• 5-15% will be based on recall.

4. When will the NExT exam be held?

The first NExT exam is approximately scheduled to be conducted in 2026 in a computer-based mode format.

5. What are the eligibility criteria?

The national exit test is applicable to undergraduate medical students. Here are a few eligibility criteria that need to be fulfilled -

• Undergraduate medical students have to be enrolled in MBBS programs at medical colleges approved by the national medical commission.
• Foreign medical graduates (FMG) who have been approved by the NMC for the purpose of obtaining a license to practice medicine as a registered medical practitioner in India.
• Any other individual holding a medical degree who intends to pursue academic courses, observerships, or other purposes as specified and approved by the NMC.

6. Are there any negative markings?

There is no negative marking in the NExT exam.

7. What is the cut-off for the NExT?

The minimum qualifying cutoff for the NExT step -1 will be set at 50%. Therefore, to pass the NExT Step-1 exam, the aspirant needs to get at least half of the highest possible raw score or 50 out of 100 marks. In each of the six subjects, they should score at least half of the highest raw score, or 50 out of 100 marks to pass the exam. The calculation of aspirants' scores from all the times he/she took NExT Step-1 exam will be considered.

For example, let's say you got passing marks in 2 subjects but failed in 4 subjects. You can retry the next NExT 1 exam, and if you get passing marks in the remaining 4 subjects, then you will be considered as having cleared the exam.

8. How can I prepare for the NExT exam?
